THE NIGERIA’S NON-ATTENDANCE AT THE MEETING CONVENED TO PRINCIPALLY DISCUSS AN ISSUE AFFECTING NIGERIA THE MOST. - A DIPLOMATIC BLUNDER
While
the UN and World Leaders intensifies
its efforts to bring to an end of insurgency and terrorism in Africa and
especially in the provision of Humanitarian Aids to the over 3.7Million
internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s)
in Nigeria, Chad, Niger etcetera, the
most troubling state of affairs in recent time, shows that the Presidency of
Nigeria is either overwhelm with some other duties it termed important, than
the life of its displaced people or the New Government is ignorant of the
function and position of the office of the UN
Humanitarian Affairs under-the Secretary-General or it has another source
of supporting its self and funding the needs of those IDP’s in Nigeria, a situation that may not be unconnected with
toying the part of using such as a means or ploy, and maybe a tool to
perpetuate government frivolities on expending public funds which usually are
the method of under-developed economies and seldom amount to corruption.
Contrary
to claims
by the Nigerian presidency that a meeting at the 70th United Nations
General Assembly to discuss the humanitarian crisis caused by the notorious activities
of the Boko Haram terrorist operation in Nigeria and some other West African
Countries was unofficial, GLOBAL NEWS OBSERVERS
had authoritatively uncovered, study, learn and report today without favor or
bias that that meeting, the NIGERIA
PRESIDENCY CALLED UNOFFICIAL IS A “HIGH-LEVEL” ONE, which was convened as one
of the MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS OF THE ONGOING UNITED NATIONS ANNUAL SUMMIT IN NEW
YORK.
The
meeting which is tagged “HIGH LEVEL
EVENT ON THE LAKE CHAD BASIN” and was held on Friday at the Conference Room
1 of the UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS IN
NEW YORK was convened by Stephen O’Brien, the United Nations
Under-Secretary-General of Humanitarian Affairs and held as part of the of the
UN Sustainable Development Summit, which opened Friday.
It
is worth to note that “The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs,
OCHA, is a very respected and important arm of the United Nations secretariat
and a meeting organized by it on an issue threatening Nigeria’s existence
cannot be so described by the same government its people were affected daily as
“AN UNOFFICIAL MEETING”, said a
respected Nigerian diplomat who requested not to be named so as not to anger
the Muhammadu Buhari administration according to the Nigerian Publisher PREMIUM
TIMES.
Global News Observers gathered from diplomats
that such occasion as this, where the Presidency had abandoned, ignored, or neglected
it function/duties is a diplomatic blunder.
The
occasion may have portrayed Nigeria as an unserious country and the Presidency
should apologize to the Nigerian people in view to bringing the culpable
officials responsible for the said mess to book, rather than offer unnecessary
excuses.
IT IS PERTINENT TO REMIND US, THAT “REUTERS” WAS THE FIRST TO REPORT THE NIGERIA’S NON-ATTENDANCE AT THE MEETING CONVENED TO PRINCIPALLY DISCUSS AN ISSUE AFFECTING NIGERIA THEM MOST.
Please note that while the radical Islamist Terrorist Sect called Boko Haram operates in and outside Nigeria, the U.N. Aid Chief Stephen O’Brien said that Nigeria is where most people have been displaced by their attacks, and it is sad to note that Nigeria did not send anyone to the United Nations event,” Reuters reported.
U.S. and European Union diplomats said they were disappointed that Nigeria did not attend the event chaired by O’Brien on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.”
"The
Nigerian presidency, during
a statement Issued on Saturday, however, claimed that, “The meeting at
which Nigeria was reportedly absent was not one of the official events of the
United Nations for which President Muhammadu Buhari and his modest delegation
are in New York”.
But contrary to attempts by the government to downplay the importance of this Humanitarian Aid Meeting and portray it as low level engagement, organizers and diplomats say the gathering was one of the most important meetings concerning the destructive militancy and terrorism ravaging Nigeria and its neighbors.
Besides top UN and EU officials in attendance, were heads of international non-governmental organizations who participated in the meeting and also in attendance was the Chad’s Foreign Minister, Moussa Faki Mahamat and the Prime Minister of Niger, Brigi Rafini.
From
the brochure of the meeting listed “High level representation from the government
of Nigeria” among other panelists was expected to speak at the meeting.
Following
the importance of the meeting, it was also broadcast on official UN online
television and radio channels.
At the
meeting, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Stephen O’Brien reminded the world to pay attention to the Lake
Chad Basin, now an epicenter of “VIOLENCE
AND TERROR” where children as young as six-years old have been used as
suicide bombers and the scene of the fastest-growing displacement crisis in
Africa.
It is worth to recall that a quarter of a million people have fled across borders,” Said the high-level meeting. “Many have walked hundreds of kilometers from Nigeria to Cameroon, Chad and Niger, in the most appalling conditions.”
Mr.
Stephen O’Brien appealed to countries in the region to give relief workers
access to those in need and also called for urgent financial contributions to
the under-funded operations.
“If we disregard the huge scale of
humanitarian needs, we could all pay a high price,” he said.
Describing
the people in the Lake Chad Basin, which straddles Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger,
as “some of the poorest and most resilient in the world,” the top UN
humanitarian official said “NOW THE
REGION HAS ALSO BECOME AN EPICENTER OF VIOLENCE AND TERROR.”
The emergence of Boko Haram has pushed them over the edge,” he said, while noting that “Over the past five months, a sharp increase in attacks by Boko Haram has uprooted 500,000 children, bringing the total number of children on the run in northeast Nigeria and neighboring countries to over 1.4 million.”
Mr. Stephen O'Brien described the appalling impact on women and children, who are being abducted, abused, raped, exploited, trafficked, and forced to work as porters and lookouts, and “children as young as six years old have been used as suicide bombers.”
With so many other humanitarian crises on the international agenda, we hear relatively little about the horrors taking place in the Lake Chad Basin,” he said. “And yet this is the scene of the fastest-growing displacement crisis in Africa, with 2.3 million people forced from their homes since May 2013.”
Mr. O’Brien warned that the future of the region, where business activity is reportedly down by 80 percent, “looks even bleaker, as farmers are unable to tend their fields and trade in some areas is at a standstill.”
UN
agencies like the World Food Programme, the UN refugee agency and the UN
Children’s Programme (UNICEF) echoed Mr. Stephen O’Brien in presenting a grim
humanitarian picture of the region and appealing for greater international
support to their efforts to reach those in desperate need.
As fallout of the meeting the Nigerian government dismissed as an “UNOFFICIAL”, the United States announced $6.8 million in funding for regional aid efforts.

I am sure they treated Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United

political blunder happened. Instead of Buhari to take experienced foreign

government need to form cabinet as soon as it can because the number of
officials in the president delegation can not be everywhere at the same time.
The volume of work that need to be done at the UN meeting overwhelmed their
number. Also wat APC gov't need to know is cutting cost of governance at the
expense of losing crucial developmental assistance is not what is killing the
country. As far as u have dedicated and determined leaders in all the aspect of
the economy their expense is minimal compare to development they can bring to
the nation. You need to have ministers, perm secs, directors, diplomats and
members of the business community too in the president delegation to anywhere
he is going. They can help. Don't look at d cost always, luk at d outcome

Having a retinue of govt employees
feeding fat on the treasury is not the issue, and without ministers doesn't
imply the govt hasn't got a permanent representative in UN joy Ogwu if you had
read the news, but the issue that it was marked down as "unofficial"
and if you're into govt you'll definitely know that some people organise the
president's schedule and if they fail to do that? It's obvious it's the failure
of those employed to do such, having ministers doesn't imply ministers work in
UN career civil servants does. Let's get information right.

All can't be perfect
Most times , we shout ourselves hoax
over issues that we know nothing or next to nothing about. Prof. Joy Ogwu is
the head of Nigeria's mission in the UN. If such important meeting was not on
the itinerary of the federal government delegation , she should be held
responsible and head must role. I rest my case.
The President surrounded himself

It is not surprising. The Army has
revealed that some powerful Borno and North-East leaders are sabotaging the
effort to root out Boko Haram. This could be an extension of the game plan.
Nigeria's absence is a diplomatic
blunder. Government not admitting this fact is corruption.

Not sure about calling it corruption
but definitely it was blunder that has now been compounded by poor media
handling.
Its unfortunate that we have a
presidency that thrives more on excuses and propaganda than facts, let's even
assume the high level UN meeting on Bokoharam was unofficial, have we found a
solution to Bokoharam to decide which meeting is official or not, yet the
Haramists continue to maim, kill, slaughter and waste thousands of lives and
properties, I don't want to share in the sentiment that we had entrusted our
common destiny on the hands of group of individuals who have distinguished
themselves in lies, deceits and propaganda! May God protect and bless the
Republic
