WHO IS THE TRADITIONAL RULER OF EGBEMA?THE ARTICLE/OPINION:Written by Bede Izog
Unlike our brothers, the Ogbas’, Ndonuiyis’, Ahoadas’, Engenis’, I think Egbema have lost it.
There is no gainsaying that Traditional leadership is perforce for development of clans and ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.
There is no gainsaying that Traditional leadership is perforce for development of clans and ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.
The Nzeobi of Egbema stool became the only recognized traditional
institution for leadership of the Egbema people after 1976. It was the
most powerful representation of our people to the gods, government, etc.
until the unfortunate balkanisation of the kingdom into Imo/Rivers
state.
That was bad enough, as it were. So, when we stood up against the further division and creation of Autonomous communities out of the existing Egbema Imo State, we were called different names including saboteurs, finger-puppets, agents of darkness and anti-Egbema development. We asked what will become of the NzeObi stool with the proliferated Ezeship in a people of homogeneous socio-cultural inclination? We could tell what happens when brothers (same origin, culture, language, etc.) fight. We warned. But did they heed?!
They said we were paid by the Onye Chukwu Nyere Ugo 1 to scuttle a just course: emancipation of our people, from him.
The same people, we knew, needed to attain political heights and achieve personal ends. Others saw the opportunity to meet destiny as Kings in their Kingdom. They got it eventually.
Now what?
I fear to posit that Egbema have witnessed more descent to disunity, bloodshed and violence, with this change. The once solemn spirit of Egbem-Alinso brotherhood was desecrated, dishonoured and debased. Unnecessary infighting and seeming directionlessness cued in.
We may argue Eze SNA Uzor was not the best. But who is? The Oba of Benin? Oba of Ogbaland? Eze gbaka gbaka? Who is? He was a man: flesh and blood. But he was our King. Now he is no more. And we have none. Or do we?
Now we have a handful of Ezes in the different Autonomous communities. Eze Mma; Eze Nkaralegwu; Eze Oba, Dikeoma, etc. But has this been of any major significance in the chequered development of our people? Now it is no longer “which part of Egbema do you come from? River or Imo State?” It has graduated to “which Autonomous (sic) Community are you from?”
Egbema have turned out to be the proverbial Periwinkle Kingdom where everybody wears the crown.
Who is our King?
Now who is the NzeObi of Egbema?

- Manfred Luwiz with this i can really see the power of wisdom #Shakespeare unity in diversity, because of greedy opportunity wasted! i think the same Educated Elite of Egbema Kingdom are major reason y Alinsom kingdom seems to Exist, causing Chao's here nd there, provide ammunition for the great youth to devour themselves: all the same i only pray for peace to be restored in the kingdom
- Noble Cliff Nwagbobi Its a serious issue that has to be addressed we ve no proper position from d Onelga axis or that of d Ohaji Egbema as well coz we re divided hp we all rise up to bring back our pride n take our rightful place we ve oil bt nothing to show for it God help us.BROUGHT TO YOU BY: Voice of All Egbema and Publishing supported byGlobal News Observers.COMING SOON!
