The Boko Haram Represent Evil, Barbarism Says CAN.
The Christian Association of
Nigeria, CAN, has said Nigeria has a lot to celebrate as a democratic nation
despite its current security challenges occasioned by the menace of the Boko
Haram insurgency.
It said the country has witnessed
positive changes since the return of democracy to the country 15 years ago and
urged Nigerians to defend democratic governance which remains the shining light
in Africa.
The association stated this in a
message to Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day.
Nigeria returned to democratic governance on May 29, 1999 after several years of military rule.
Nigeria returned to democratic governance on May 29, 1999 after several years of military rule.
“15 years ago, there are a lot of
changes (positive) that Nigerians have witnessed in polity that could not have
been possible under any kind of military rule, from telecoms to the aviation,
media to health, education and the economy, the changes are clear,” CAN said.
“On the occasion of this year’s
celebration, we are all reminded of our responsibility to collectively defend
this democracy that remains the shining light on our continent.
“I call on all Nigerians to join
hands with their leaders at all levels to work for the sustenance of this democracy,
let us uphold the values that will protect it and down play those issues that
have threatened democracy in Nigeria.”
While urging Nigerians to unite for
more positive changes, the association noted changes don’t come easily, but
with difficulty and that it is usually the most resisted decision of a leader.
It stressed, “I want to assure
Nigerians that these are surely not times to despair or lament over losses;
these are indeed times of gratitude and thanksgiving for our nation.
“No doubt our country is going
through difficult times- social strife, armed violence and declining moral
values, but for the fact that Jesus Christ is still on the throne calls for
celebration and hope by all and sundry.”
CAN said the country would not
succumb to the wishes of the insurgents because doing so would “eternally kill
the spirit of Christianity in all of us; Boko Haram remains evil, barbaric and
must be fought with all the arsenals that we have got as a people and a
nation.” Coiled from Premium Times.
